A parent-teacher association or parent-teacher organization (PTA or PTO) are different types of school organizations that all come together for a purpose and that is to try and help the schools, students and the communities they support. All of the individuals working for the PTA or PTO will be considered volunteers; and while they have no direct profit, they will be working to generate income to keep the PTA or PTO organizations functioning as intended. Do these organizations need an employer identification number or Tax ID (EIN) number though?
A non-profit organization is a category in which this type of PTA / PTO organization will fall. Since they are in fact an organization, though, that also means they need to file tax returns and do all proper tax reporting. To do this, they will need an employer identification number. PTAs and PTOs can obtain their official Tax IDs online via the Non-Profit Tax ID Application and by selecting the PTA / PTO option from the drop-down menu.
